Don't laugh

The room was divided, one side pitch black, the other filled with blinding light. Kuro, after experiencing her death a second time, entered into the Darkness with her Balancer holding tightly to her hand. Her Balancer, Asariel of the Moon, urged her forward until they stood on the edge of Darkness. Kuro looked up at Asariel, questioning why she had been brought back to life while they waited. She had failed once already at living and dieing in her mind, why should she have to try again? An unfamiliar flame was born again inside of her small frame. Anger.
There was no sound, but Kuro knew they were no longer a company of only two. They were very difficult to make out as they were dressed completely in white and surrounded by Light. It was a second pair, a Balancer and child. Kuro pulled her long black hair over her shoulder as her partner’s soft pink eyes tried to meet Kuro’s blue. Kuro wrinkled her nose at the girl. Kuro watched as the child of Light slid away from her Balancer. The Balancer moved to catch the girl.
“No Zepar, let them be.” Asariel commanded. Zepar froze and watched as the child of Light danced to the edge of Light and Darkness. Her rose colored eyes were glued to Kuro as she reached out her hand, putting her entire arm in the shadows.
“My name is Shiro. What, by chance, is the name that you were gifted to pair with mine?” Shiro had a high, soft, bell like voice to match her expression. Kuro’s eyes tightened. She thought Shiro looked stupidly sweet and refused to touch the outstretched hand that began to tremble in the chill of the shadows.
“Come now, at least greet your partner... You will not see her again… for many years,” Asariel said as he pushed Kuro forward. Kuro glared back at the angel of the Moon, at Shiro, then turned to the side and looked away. Shiro leaned forward ever so slightly, her nose barely missing the shadows. She seemed tempted to cross the border further, but understood she would in fact perish if she moved too far into Darkness so soon after her rebirth.
“I am not, at all, bothered by your attempt to deter me,“ Shiro cocked her head to the side, her white hair rolled off her shoulder. “I know you are kind… as sure as the gem on my forehead is the essence of Light.” Kuro glanced back at Shiro and was confused by Shiro’s instantaneous trust. The child of Darkness dug through the memories that were and were not her own. In those memories she could not count, there had never once been eyes like Shiro’s staring at her, never someone who trusted her so much. She looked away again, pinching her eyes shut and tried desperately to find someone cared for her… there had only been one. After a moment Kuro reached out and touched Shiro’s hand. Shiro’s smile grew brighter and she wove her fingers with Kuro’s.
“My name… is Kuro.” Kuro was surprised for a moment by the smoothness of her own voice. Another moment passed by and Shiro’s expression changed, still happy, but…
“Hello Kuro… you have an excellent grip.”
